Have you thought of a holiday in Ireland?

Praia da Luz

The Village Church

Praia da Luz  has an easy, friendly atmosphere and is an ideal place for a family holiday with lots to do in the area.  Or, if you wish, you can do nothing at all, just relax and enjoy some peace and quiet and the wonderful views in beautiful surroundings at the villa!

Luz has a supermarket, some small shops, pharmacy, Bank, internet cafe and DVD rental shop.  There are lots of good restaurants within walking distance serving a wide variety of foods & seafood.

             Luz Beach

           Praia da Luz

"Praia" is the Portuguese word for beach, and the sandy beach at Praia da Luz has been awarded a Blue Flag for quality and safety.  The beach is a short 10 minute walk from the villa, past the pretty traditional Church in the village centre, and continuing down a paved promenade that is lined with palm trees.

There is a variety of water sports available in and around Praia da Luz.  Horse-riding, cycling and fishing are also available...and of course Golf is a major sport with several famous Golf Courses nearby, the nearest one being Boa Vista only 2km away. Parque da Floresta is about 4 miles from the villa.

There are lovely scenic walks along the sea shore westwards from Luz towards the small village of Burgau, and in the opposite direction a cliff top walk towards Lagos.   A short drive to Cape St. Vincent (Cabo de Sao Vicente), the most South Westerly point in Europe, has spectacular views of the rugged Atlantic coastline.  Driving northwards towards the mountains you can visit the well-known spa town of Monchique and explore its beautiful scenery and view large swathes of the coastline from a higher level.

There are two Zoos in the Western Algarve: Lagos Zoo, at Bensafrim, north west of Lagos and "Omega Park"  between Portimao and Monchique, which has a wide variety of monkeys.    "Zoomarine" is an ocean theme park, near Guia, less than an hour's drive from Luz, providing shows and exhibitions featuring dolphins, seals, sharks, parrots, crocodiles etc.

Lagos, the largest town in the Western Algarve, is about 6km east of Luz.  It is an attractive, friendly, historic town with nicely paved pedestrianised shopping area with a wide variety of shops, restaurants and bars. The safe, strategic position of Lagos harbour has been confirmed by the construction of a modern marina which provides the first safe anchorage on the south coast for yachts coming in from the Atlantic.

Stretching eastwards from Lagos Marina is the sandy beach called Meia Praia, at 4 km it is the longest in the Algarve.  The well-known Golf Course of Penares is at the eastern end of Meia Praia.  On the coast between Lagos and Luz is the much-photographed beach of Praia de Dona Ana with its very distinctive rock formations and nearby sea caves and grottoes.  Boat trips to see the caves and local dolphins are very popular.                           Lagos from the Harbour
